What we've gathered from this year's fashion week runways (and what the fabulous fashion folk attending these events were wearing), what's currently flying off the shelves of high-end and affordable brands, and what the popular fashion bloggers of Instagram are sporting on their arms at the moment, is that it's crystal clear to us which bag trends are going to run the town this spring and summer. We are happy to report that most of this year's trends are not only super wearable, there are fantastic affordable versions available, too! Let's have a look at this year's most popular purses!

Okay okay, I can guess what you're thinking, "Liesl? Is that a fanny pack!? Nooooo!" I understand that this brought on horrifying flashbacks to those neon-colored nineties fanny packs we so proudly sported as kids (and that we've all tried to block out from our memories...), but that is a far cry from the more sophisticated bum bag, or belt bag if you will, that I'm talking about. (By the way, did you ever think you'd hear the phrase, "sophisticated bum bag"?!) Belt bags have become all the rage the past few months, as the much coveted Gucci GG Marmont leather belt bag has been photographed on the midriff of every fashion blogger worth her salt. Honestly, it did take me a while to warm up to the idea of this controversial bag, but I must say that I've grown quite fond of this trend. I mean, come on, it's just as functional as it is cool; it can hold up your pants and carry your belongings, all the while making you hands-free. Winning! Not just for fishermen anymore! These net bags have become more and more popular over the past year, and now they are popping up everywhere online, and in every fast fashion store. I love the effortless look of these, and also its versatility; it's not just the perfect eco-friendly grocery bag or chic farmers' market accessory, it can be used as a beach bag or just an everyday bag, too. (Just make sure your items are secured and won't fall through the openings!) Get a beautiful cotton one from The Line, or from any of these more affordable stores listed below. I may, or may not, have a serious obsession with round handle bags right now. It all started with the beautiful Bonsai bucket bags by Simon Miller, which I've been lusting after for months. Since then, I've started noticing round handle bags everywhere! It's such a great bag to go with spring and summer outfits, whether you're after the more casual street style bucket bags à la Simon Miller, or the more evening appropriate top-handle purses like the classy Chloe Nile cross-body. If you love the trend, but don't want to drop the big bucks, you can check out these great, more affordable alternatives I discovered online.

Hey, what's the deal with all these "see what's in my bag" bags? Just like the popular net bags, this is another one where you really have to carefully consider what you're carrying in your bag, as it will be on full display to the public. (Unless you decide to carry a bag within this bag.) This trend got my full attention when photos of the plastic transparent CÉLINE shopper hit the interwebs a few months ago. Is it totally ridiculous to carry a designer transparent plastic shopping bag? Absolutely! Do I secretly want this much talked about bag designed by Phoebe Philo. Of course! That said, there's no way I'm dishing out that kind of money for this trend piece. Instead, I had a little peak around and found some other transparent purse options from more inexpensive stores, which are perfect if you're all about this look, but don't want to break the bank.

Probably one of my favorite bag trends this year is the structured bucket bag. I've always been a bucket bag fan (hello, remember the Mansur Gavriel bucket bag craze!?) This year, the main player on the bucket bag front is fairly newcomer, STAUD. Their popular Moreau bucket has been flying off the shelves, and you can count yourself very lucky if you can get your hands on this much coveted bag. STAUD makes other lovely bucket bags, which you should check out if you want to hop on the STAUD bucket bag bandwagon. If you are fans of this shape, also have a look at the more affordable options I found at Topshop and Mango.

Luckily this trend carried over from last year, as I'm still totally obsessed with all my basket bags. And now that the fast fashion stores have caught on, there are so so many affordable options to choose from. Also, I found a huge selection of lovely basket bags available at Zara, Urban Outfitters and Topshop. If you like any of them, I'd suggest you buy them ASAP, as I'm sure they'll be flying off the shelves this spring.
