You would think that by now we've made our way through all the coffee shops in Taipei, but friends, we are only getting started. When we recently went to MKCR, we were just reminded again of how many amazing cafes there still are for us to discover; these neighborhoods around Beimen, Ximen and Taipei Main Station MRT stations are just packed with spots calling our latte-loving selves!
MKCR is located right next to Beimen (North Gate), a popular tourist attraction where many visitors go to take photos. If only these folks had popped into MKCR for a cuppa, they would have had a wonderful view of the gate from the second floor of the cafe, which has a huge window overlooking it.
As you step into the cafe, you'll see the baristas hard at work. There's a bar area where you make your order, and then you can head upstairs to the second floor to find a seat. The second-floor space is very minimally decorated, with wooden floors and white walls, and a few small plants adding a welcome pop of green to the mix; very Japanese! There's one big table that sits eight people, some small tables along the wall, and then bar-stool seating along the window.
When we arrived there at ten in the morning on a Saturday, we had the place to ourselves for a mere five minutes before other caffeine junkies started occupying the seats. This cozy spot has such a nice and relaxing atmosphere, that I can imagine it would be a great place to go to get some work done on your laptop. It's also a good sanctuary to kill some time in while waiting for your bus or train from the noisy and busy Taipei Main Station nearby. Below, you can see their full menu, and also what we ordered.

Yes, it was only 10am when we ordered dessert with our coffees. (Hey, don't judge us!) I'm so glad we decided to get a nibble with our lattes, because the Caramel Apple and Sea Salt Peanut Cheesecakes were creamy, sweet and delicious! I got a regular Latte, and Tieneke ordered the Brown Sugar Latte. MKCR offers an array of coffee options; they have the classics like Espresso, Americano, Cappuccino and regular Lattes. But they also make a Sesame Latte and Osmanthus Latte, which sounds very interesting. They didn't leave out the tea drinkers, as they offer a bunch of milk tea options, and also local Oolong among other. They have fresh cakes available every day, and also sell the popular Harrits donuts (which unfortunately hadn't been delivered yet when we were there.)
Would we recommend MKCR? ABSOLUTELY! We had a lovely experience there and the desserts and drinks were top-notch. Our orders were served very timely, and the simple space offers a very relaxing and serene ambiance.
