Ruins Coffee Roasters has been on our list of cafes to visit for ages, but because it's quite the journey to get there (it's close to Taipei Zoo) we've only recently taken on this trek. We took an Uber there, but the other option is to take the MRT to Taipei Zoo Station and then walk another twenty minutes to the cafe, or you can cab it (which will take about five minutes from the station).
So why were we drawn to this spot out in the middle of nowhere? After seeing some photos online of the cafe's unique interior (lots of vintage furniture, quirky decorations, and even an outdoor seating area among plants and trees), and also the coffee and dessert options, we knew this place was right up our alley.

Keep in mind that it's not possible to reserve a table ahead of time, and that the cafe fills up super fast! We got there right when they opened at 1pm, and within 10 minutes the place was packed. We immediately made our order right after we arrived, and grabbed a table on the second floor, which overlooks the coffee station on the first floor. We would have loved to sit outside and enjoy their lovely patio, but it was pouring rain. Maybe next time!
As their name suggests, their specialty is coffee. (And they have an incredible selection!) They also have a bunch of options of freshly baked desserts, other drinks like tea and juice, and also wine and craft beer. We also noticed they even have Sloppy Joe on the menu, but we thought we'd stick with desserts. We ordered three desserts to try; a brownie, berry cake and lemon cake. Tieneke got the Honey Cinnamon Hot Latte, and I ordered Taylor's Earl Grey Tea. Below you can see their array of coffees on the menu. Their desserts change daily; they usually offer four options.

In the end, the long journey to this cafe was totally worth it! Our drinks were absolutely delicious and the desserts were so good, we gobbled it up within seconds. Both the brownie and berry cake are served with scoops of ice cream which melts over the desserts (and now my mouth is literally watering as I'm thinking back on it...). The decadent desserts, amazing drinks and the casual atmosphere made our experience there so cozy and enjoyable. Definitely a cool spot to hang out with some friends!

We highly recommend Ruins Coffee Roasters if you happen to be in the area, but also if you feel like venturing out of the city center for a couple of hours and enjoy some quality coffee at a unique cafe. We know we'll definitely be back, because we'd like to make use of that beautiful outdoor patio area!
