On a recent road trip down Taiwan's scenic East coast, The Husband and I knew we wanted to make a stop in Hualien for lunch at Salt Lick for their out-of-this-world Carolina pulled pork sandwiches. We rarely eat meat anymore, so when we do, it must be something really special. We had dined at this smokehouse before on a previous trip, and couldn't resist "pigging out" on their mouthwatering BBQ again. Salt Lick is a popular western restaurant in the area, specializing in American BBQ favorites like pulled pork, ribs, brisket and also authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza. They also have a cool bar area and taproom, which makes it a go-to place for craft beer in Hualien.
The Salt Lick has plenty of comfortable seating (even some tables outdoors!), and is the perfect hangout spot for bigger groups. The massive 20-foot oak bar that greets you as you enter the restaurant, and the dark ceilings and cool decor, gives it a "moody" pub-feel (although it's definitely kid-friendly, too!).
This is one of those restaurants where you want to order EVERYTHING on the menu, but seeing that neither of us is a puma, we decided to just stick to one meal each and got what we initially came back for. We both ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich, which is served on a toasted bun and topped with coleslaw and barbecue sauce. The sandwich meal also comes with a side (which you can choose from a huge selection of mouthwatering options). We went with mashed potatoes and potato salad, and also got a mac 'n' cheese to share because, why the hell not!? Check out their complete menu below!

It's hard to describe how delicious this food was; the smokey fragrance of the pork, the BBQ sauce, the tasty bun and coleslaw, and of course the drool-worthy smoked-to-perfection meat was just the perfect combination. The portion is also quite generous, and we were both stuffed afterwards.
You guys should absolutely visit this restaurant next time you're in Hualien! We would have loved to enjoy a craft beer, too, but as we were on the road it just wasn't meant to be this time. Their smoked-to-perfection meats, friendly service, and the laid-back atmosphere of the place makes it such a pleasant (and satisfying) spot to hang out. Highly recommend it!
