If you're looking for a rustic, yet elegant and extremely unique restaurant in Taipei, 香色 Xiang Se is the place for you. Tucked away on a quiet lane close to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall MRT station, is this gem of a restaurant, perfect for a lazy brunch over the weekend, or a romantic date night in the evening. Tieneke and I recently enjoyed a lovely brunch here, and were blown away by the creative and beautifully presented (and tasty!) dishes, and the gorgeous, full of character, space.
You could easily walk by 香色 Xiang Se and miss it, as it has a very unassuming entrance, only marked by a "Cafe" sign. From the outside, it looks very much just like an old home! Once you step through the door of the restaurant you are greeted with a spacious outdoor seating area, occupied by rustic wooden tables and chairs, plants and the absolutely stunning facade of the old building. Inside the building there are plenty more tables and an open kitchen.
We got a table outside, and even though the hot July summer sun was beating down that day, we felt comfortable sitting outside under cover. We loved the relaxed vibe of the place and the nice ambiance. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the service was swift. It is absolutely essential to make a reservation, so make sure to call ahead of time or make an online reservation (details below.)
Our reservation was for 11AM, so we got to order from the brunch menu. Every single item on the menu sounds amazing, and we had a hard time choosing our meals. Below you can see the full brunch menu.

I finally decided on the Kale & Tropical Juice (a refreshing concoction of Kale, pineapple, apple and banana) and French Toast, and Tieneke got an Iced Latte and the Avotoast. Our meals were prepared quickly, and it was beautifully plated and presented. (Almost too pretty to eat!) The French Toast was out of this world, and quite a generous portion! It is served with seasonal fruit and I highly recommend it. Tieneke loved her avocado toast as well, which is served with poached eggs on sourdough bread and a simple side salad.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable experience at 香色 Xiang Se. The convenient location, impeccable service, absolutely beautiful space, and delicious food all adds up for a perfect weekend morning ladies' brunch. We highly recommend it for a group of friends, and think it would be a lovely spot for a birthday party or event, too. It's so good for taking photos!
