U.I.J Hotel & Hostel 友愛街旅館 | Tainan Hotel | A Style Alike

Tainan is a city in Taiwan that I've always wanted to visit. Tales of its delicious food, interesting history and beautiful art have been shared with me ever since I stepped foot in Taiwan more than 10 years ago. So when The Husband signed up for his very first triathlon recently, I would be lying if I said that the fact that it would be taking place in Tainan didn't make me extra excited for it! Finally I could see a bit of Taiwan's original capital city (which is only 2 hours on the HSR from Taipei!). We decided to stay at U.I.J Hotel & Hostel 友愛街旅館, a 4-star hotel that I had spotted on social media a few times, and that has excellent reviews online.

FACILITIES & SPACES:

The building itself is new, modern and beautifully designed. As you enter there is a spacious lobby with a check-in counter, sofas, a bookstore and a Washida cafe. Also on the first floor is the hotel's in-house restaurant, Dor 留, which serves international cuisine (loved the pasta for dinner!), and a simple breakfast in the morning.

On the third floor is a laundromat, a spacious shared lounge, comfortable seating area and a gorgeous open-space kitchen. In this space is also where you can find a computer, vending machine, water dispenser and phone. The comfy shared lounge area leads out to the outside sundeck and terrace. (This is an absolutely gorgeous space and such a unique feature in Taiwan!). The dormitory rooms can be found here, and also on the 4th floor. Private guest rooms are on the 5th to 9th floors.

ROOMS:

What I like about this hotel is that they cater for a range of budgets. You can stay in their hostel section, which offers stylish bunk beds in mixed or female-only rooms. You also have the option of reserving a private guest room. There are four options of private guest rooms; the DELUXE ROOM, the SUPERIOR ROOM, the FAMILY ROOM and the U.I.J SUITE.

We stayed in a DELUXE ROOM which was on the 9th floor and had a beautiful view of Tainan. The room is spacious and has a (SUPER!) comfortable bed. Also in the room is a TV, complimentary reusable bottled water, a refrigerator, a record player (you can choose from a collection of records downstairs in the lobby), two comfy chairs, and a huge bathroom. Our bathroom had a shower and bath tub, and a Japanese toilet. We loved the Malin + Goetz amenities in the room, the leather slippers, and that there were plenty of room for our bags and things.

LOCATION & NEIGHBORHOOD:

This hotel has an excellent location in Tainan's West Central District, which is where many interesting sights and landmarks are located. Within walking distance of the hotel is the Confucius Temple, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Shennong Street, Chihkan Tower, Grand Matsu Temple, 全美戲院 Chin Men Theater and the Hayashi Department Store. It's also very close to the Blueprint Culture & Creative Park. There's a 7/Eleven nearby and also plenty of cafes, markets and restaurants. We easily explored our neighborhood on foot, and when we wanted to venture out a little further, the hotel staff called a taxi for us.
